Iron gall ink (also known as common ink, standard ink, oak gall ink or iron gall nut ink) is made from iron salts and tannic acids from vegetable sources. It was the standard ink formulation used  for the fourteen-hundred-year period between the 5th and 19th centuries, remained in widespread use well into the 20th century, and is still sold today.
As the ink dries, its iron component oxidizes from clear to dark gray, transforming the ink into a sophisticated off-black color before your eyes.
Although should be noted that in case of leaving Iron Gall ink in unused pen for a very long period of time, and depending on its drying out on many factors, it is possible occurrence of corrosion in the case of pens with nibs made of stainless steel.
