Toile de Jouy: A Timeless Classic
Originating in France in the 18th century, Toile de Jouy is a cotton fabric renowned for its intricate, repeating monochromatic patterns, often depicting pastoral, mythological and historical scenes.
The name comes from Jouy-en-Josas, a town near Versailles where the German-born craftsman and entrepreneur Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf founded the famous Jouy Manufactory in 1760. The manufacture soon became renowned for the quality of its textiles and for its innovative printing techniques.
Oberkampf revolutionised textile production by introducing engraved copper rollers, allowing increasingly complex and detailed patterns to be reproduced through continuous printing. Initially particularly popular among the nobility and upper bourgeoisie, Toile de Jouy gradually became an authentic symbol of French craftsmanship and savoir-faire.
Today, this iconic decorative pattern continues to inspire the worlds of interior design and fashion, confirming its status as a timeless classic.
