Furuta – A Legacy of Japanese Craftsmanship and Timeless Writing Instruments

The story of Furuta is one of passion, dedication, and the preservation of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Founded by Seigo Furuta, Koubou Furuta represents a new generation of master artisans committed to creating exceptional fountain pens through meticulous handcraftsmanship and techniques passed down over decades.

Born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, in 1963, Seigo Furuta spent much of his professional life serving in the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
His fascination with fountain pens began during a trip to Hawaii, where he encountered a beautifully crafted koa wood fountain pen. Inspired by its beauty, he began learning woodturning and pen making as a personal passion, long before it became his profession.

A turning point came when Furuta was introduced to the legendary pen craftsman Kohei Kubo, one of Japan's most respected fountain pen makers and nib specialists.
Impressed by Furuta's machining skills, Kubo invited him to demonstrate his work in his workshop. What began as a single meeting soon evolved into a mentorship spanning more than a decade.

Working closely alongside Kubo, Furuta manufactured pen barrels, refined his turning techniques, and gradually learned every aspect of traditional fountain pen construction.
In 2021, he relocated his workshop next to Kubo's atelier, allowing the two craftsmen to collaborate on a daily basis while continuously refining both manufacturing techniques and specialized tooling.

The influence of Kohei Kubo cannot be overstated. Widely regarded as one of Japan's last great masters of traditional fountain pen manufacturing and nib craftsmanship, Kubo devoted more than seventy years to the art of pen making, restoring and producing countless writing instruments while training only a select few successors.
Today, Seigo Furuta is recognized as one of the principal heirs to that remarkable tradition.

Every Furuta fountain pen is produced entirely by hand in very limited numbers. Pen bodies are crafted from premium ebonite or carefully selected hardwoods, then finished using traditional Urushi lacquer, one of Japan's oldest and most revered decorative arts.
Many models are further enhanced with exquisite Maki-e decoration executed by renowned lacquer artists, including Koichiro Okazaki, known professionally as Kogaku, a recipient of prestigious recognition for his mastery of traditional Japanese lacquer art.

The writing system itself reflects the same philosophy of authenticity. Many Furuta models feature large handcrafted 18-karat gold nibs, built according to the techniques inherited from Kohei Kubo, and utilize the traditional Japanese Eyedropper filling system—a historic mechanism admired for its exceptional ink capacity and its connection to the earliest Japanese fountain pens.

Today, Furuta stands among the finest contemporary Japanese artisan pen makers. Every writing instrument embodies generations of accumulated knowledge, uncompromising craftsmanship, and profound respect for Japan's cultural heritage.
More than simply a fountain pen, each creation is a work of functional art—a testament to the enduring beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the timeless pleasure of writing by hand.
