Dalvey History

The company was founded in Scotland in 1897 as a musical instrument manufactory, specialising in the production of Highland bagpipes.
 
The creation of any musical instrument is a delicate art.  The crafting and finishing must be conducted to exacting standards, and ensuring excellent acoustic properties requires a very high degree of rigour and discrimination within the design and production processes.
 
The craftsmen who turned the drones of the pipes from African blackwood, ornamented with carved silver and ivory, were musicians themselves.  This was necessary for them to have an understanding of the results that they were striving towards.
Sir Patrick Grant of Dalvey, Bt., is the owner and Managing Director of the company.
 
As a young man, Sir Patrick worked as a deerstalker in the mountainous Highlands of Scotland, and as a fisherman on the dangerous north-western coasts.
 
After working on others’ boats he ultimately acquired and skippered a small vessel laying lobster kreels, earning enough to fund himself through a law degree at the University of Glasgow.
The Dalvey design philosophy is informed by the principle of equipping discerning men with items that are expressly relevant to them.
 
Central to the design process is the idea of an independent-minded man who constructs his own lifestyle, and who therefore needs versatile modern classics – pieces that make a statement of elegance and quality, and that avoid a transitory modishness.  We aim to have a focussed range: to perfect key designs using construction techniques that guarantee performance and functionality.
 
This means that a large part of the design and development process involves researching materials and craft skills, and this work runs alongside and informs the development of all our designs.
